KSD Group delivers building maintenance and project work to over 10,000 sites across the UK, for clients including Stonegate, Sainsburys, Tesco and Morrisons. The business runs out of Brighton and Hove with engineers, carpenters, plumbers and electricians on the road.

The problem

Their previous camera system had no remote access.

“With our previous camera solution, the biggest challenge was the lack of remote access... leaving us rooting around under seats to remove hard drives, then having poor software to review footage.”, Gareth Smith, KSD Group

At-fault claims were rising, and without footage there was no way to establish what had caused an incident, or to contest liability when they believed the driver had done nothing wrong.

What KSD wanted was specific: a tamperproof forward-facing camera, remote download, at least 14 days of history, recording on ignition, and automatic capture on impact.

There was a fifth requirement, and it mattered more than the rest.

“The people driving our vehicles... work horrendous hours... it was very important that we gave them a system that would support them, and that they understood that it wasn’t a spy in the cab.”, Gareth Smith, KSD Group

What was fitted

MANTIS partner In Car Technology deployed across more than 100 vehicles, with room to grow past 120.

Tamperproof AI forward-facing cameras. Remote access to footage through the platform. The Evidence Center for reviewing and managing clips. Impact-triggered capture and upload. Fourteen days of cloud storage as a minimum. Daily health check reports. Integration with the Webfleet telematics KSD already ran.

What changed

**Claims.** Footage goes to the insurer directly, so liability is assigned on evidence rather than argued. The Evidence Center also supports the conversation afterwards with the driver, which is where the improvement actually comes from.

**Specific incidents settled.** A roundabout collision where a third party changed lanes improperly, proven non-fault. An accident where responsibility needed clarifying. A routine police stop, documented. A road rage complaint made against one of their drivers, resolved on the footage.

**The daily health check.** An overview of which cameras are working, every morning, rather than finding out on the day footage is needed.

**The part about the drivers.** After seeing a stressful incident in the footage, involving another road user, KSD management contacted the engineer, asked how he was and talked through his options.

That is what turns a camera into something a driver accepts. Not a policy document, and not a promise, but the company using the footage on the driver’s behalf before it ever uses it any other way.

**Live view.** Checking where a vehicle is, what is happening around it, and whether something flagged by the help desk needs a response now.

Would they recommend it

“Yes! - what more can I say.”
