Cheap cameras are expensive. The Mortar & Screed Company found that out before switching, and the cost showed up in claims that would not close rather than in the purchase price.
In a video case study produced by our partner AES Fleet, Wesley, Plant Manager at Mortar & Screed’s Bromsgrove depot, went through what changed across their 38-vehicle fleet.
The problem was retrieval, not recording
The old system recorded. Getting anything back out of it was the issue.
“It was definitely a recurring headache... We used to struggle a lot with camera footage on that. Recalling the footage was a major problem.”
When something happened on site or on the road, not being able to produce the footage meant claims dragged, which ties up money and people for months.
The switch
Mortar & Screed met AES Fleet and MANTIS at the Concrete Show in Birmingham. What decided it was access, build quality and the ePod hardware.

What changed
**Getting to the footage.** “With the MANTIS system, I’m able to bring up any footage within 30 seconds.”
**Claims.** When a third-party driver drifts into a lane and hits one of their HGVs, the HD footage goes to the insurer straight away. That settles liability early, which is where claim cost is decided.
**Dispatch.** The portal shows where trucks are on a concrete pour, so the next loads can be timed without, as Wesley puts it, “100 phone calls a day.”
Was it worth it
“Our investment in the system as a company is definitely justified. I would recommend all fleet providers looking at a cheaper system to invest their money wisely. You’re looking for a company that is going to work with you... with good quality systems in place and good customer service.”
