Harry Girvan, CEO of MANTIS, went on the Life & Depth podcast with host Ryan McDaid. The conversation is about building a company rather than about cameras, and three things in it are worth pulling out.

Hiring is the constraint

Harry’s argument is that there is a ceiling on what any founder can do personally, and that most founders reach it later than they should. The fix is hiring well, hiring early, and then getting out of the way.

“Find your tribe,” as he puts it.

Staying close to the customer

The second theme is what happens when a company stops talking to the people who use the product. Harry treats customer contact as the thing that keeps a roadmap honest rather than as an account management task.

For a business selling into fleets, that means depots and yards rather than conference rooms.

Earlier ventures, and what they cost

He is direct about the businesses that did not work. The useful version of that story is not that failure builds character. It is that he can now name the specific mistakes and avoid them.

The part most founders skip

Harry is candid about work and life not balancing themselves, and about what happens when you assume they will.

“You can’t pour from an empty cup,” he says.
