You fitted cameras to prove liability and reduce claims. Two renewals later the premium is still climbing.

This happens often enough that operators rip the system out and fit another one, which produces the same result. The technology is usually not the problem.

The number the insurer is looking at

Your loss ratio: the total cost of your claims divided by the total premium you pay, as a percentage.

  • 0% – 40% Loss Ratio: You’re a low-risk client. A premium reduction is likely.
  • 40% – 50% Loss Ratio: You’re a stable risk. Premiums will likely remain static.
  • 50%+ Loss Ratio: You’re a high-risk client. Expect a significant premium increase.

Fitting cameras does not move that number. Reducing what your insurer pays out does. Cameras contribute in three ways, and every one of them needs somebody to do something with the footage.

1. Fewer at-fault collisions

The cheapest claim is the one that never happens.

Cameras and telematics together show which behaviours recur and who is doing them: harsh braking, sharp cornering, distraction. That is coachable, and coaching from thirty seconds of footage lands differently than coaching from a report.

This is the slowest of the three and the one that moves the number most.

2. Non-fault claims that stay off your record

Every payout for something that was not your fault still counts against you.

That covers organised “crash-for-cash” claims, and it covers ordinary incidents where liability landed on your driver because nobody could show otherwise. A full view around the vehicle is what settles those.

Removing a handful of them from a year has a disproportionate effect at renewal.

3. Claims that close quickly

An open claim gets more expensive every week it stays open. Third-party costs, such as hire car charges, can quickly spiral out of control, sometimes exceeding £200 per day.

A complete First Notification of Loss reaching the insurer immediately, footage and telemetry attached, is what stops the drift. Liability gets decided while the facts are still available rather than months later from statements.

Why the approach matters more than the kit

A camera recording to a card in a vehicle nobody visits is a cost. The fleets whose premiums actually move are the ones using the footage weekly rather than retrieving it after an incident.

MANTIS RECON’s Collision Insights packages the footage, the telematics and the vehicle data into a single evidence report, which is the part that makes a fast claim possible.
