AI in fleet safety: what it changes on a working day
Most fleets already use AI somewhere. This panel looks at the harder question: what it does for safety, evidence and risk once it is running in a depot.

Watch the full session
A 67-minute Motor Transport panel with Matthew Vass, Channel Director at MANTIS, Steven Lewis of Webfleet, Alex Knowles of Knowles Logistics and Mark Cartwright of National Highways.
What the panel covered
AI in telematics as a filter: deciding which data needs a person
Several camera angles on one incident, and patterns across a fleet
Why a tool only counts if it survives contact with a depot
Fewer people hurt on the road as the outcome that matters
The argument about adopting AI is largely over
The session opened with a poll. At the start, 67% of attendees said they already use AI in their daily fleet operations (poll of attendees at the live session).
Steven Lewis from Webfleet described AI in telematics as a filter rather than a source. Fleets already generate more data than anyone reads. The work is deciding which of it needs a human.
Matthew Vass covered the video side: several angles on one incident, and patterns across a fleet that nobody would spot vehicle by vehicle. Alex Knowles made the point that kept the session honest: if it takes a transport manager twenty minutes to get an answer, the system stops getting used. Mark Cartwright of National Highways brought it back to fewer people hurt on the road.
The question underneath
What happens when it is wrong?
A detection you cannot check against footage is a guess with a confidence score attached. Ask how you check one.
Who looks at the score?
A risk score nobody reviews is a number. Ask who sees it, and what they are expected to do about it.
How fast does the clip arrive?
The value is whether the right thirty seconds of video reach the right person soon enough to act on it.
Frequently asked questions
Who is this webinar for?
Fleet, transport, safety and operations managers weighing up what AI and video telematics do in practice, whether or not they run them already.
Who was on the panel?
Matthew Vass, Channel Director at MANTIS; Steven Lewis of Webfleet; Alex Knowles of Knowles Logistics; and Mark Cartwright of National Highways. The session was run by Motor Transport.
Does MANTIS work with Webfleet?
Yes. In the UK and Ireland, MANTIS integrates with Webfleet and Geotab, so you add MANTIS cameras through the telematics provider you already use.
